Martin Mandelbaum always wanted to be a professional footballer but failed and so in 1973 he got a place to study Pharmacy at Portsmouth Polytechnic and qualified as a pharmacist in 1977. It was at college that he met his pharmacist wife Gillian and many other notable pharmacists who currently are pushing the boundaries of the profession.
He joined Boots and had various roles within the company as a pharmacist and a branch manager before he left in 1986 to buy his first pharmacy.Over the next 18 years together with a business partner and his wife he gathered together a small chain of pharmacies across Sussex and Hampshire, both established and new openings.
He joined West Sussex LPC in 1987, becoming vice-chair in 1993 and then chair in 1995.He was a member and chair until 2001 when the pharmacies were finally sold and a sedate life watching professional football beckoned.
He was asked to help the LPC as a temporary Secretary to cover for a short while and was soon appointed as a permanent Secretary and then Chief Officer in West Sussex and taking on a similar role in first West Surrey LPC in 2003 and for Surrey LPC in 2006.
He is currently Chief Officer of both Surrey LPC and West Sussex LPC, still ably assisted by his wife Gillian, and tries to watch sport whenever he can.
