Surrey & Sussex contractors encouraged to campaign for our sector during the general election campaign.

November 24, 2019

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA), Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) have created resources to help all 530 contractors across Surrey and Surrey promote community pharmacy ahead of the General Election on 12th December.

The upcoming election presents a great opportunity for our sector to be recognised as a valuable health and wellbeing asset, so the pharmacy organisations have created a shared ‘Vote Pharmacy’ manifesto’, which sets out how they hope any new Government will commit to investing in our sector.

“There are a number of ways in which contractors in Surrey ans Sussex can get involved in the campaign” said Sandra Lamont, communications and engagement lead for Community Pharmacy Surrey & Sussex.

“Inviting local candidates from all parties to visit their local pharmacy and sign a pledge of support, getting involved in social media conversations and using the #votepharmacy hashtag” she added.

What community pharmacies can do

  • Find out who your local parliamentary candidates are by visiting www.whocanivotefor.co.uk which lists all the candidates for each constituency. You can also find more information from the Electoral Commission including details of your electoral services team at your local council.
  • Invite candidates to visit your pharmacy so they can see first-hand why community pharmacies are essential to the health and wellbeing of local communities. Make sure you:
    • Contact your local newspapers before the visit to get press coverage, for example ask if they can send along a photographer. It’s a good idea to discuss this first with the candidate’s team as they may already be arranging local press coverage.
    • Take photos of the visit and share on social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) using the hashtag #VotePharmacy.
    • Tell your Local Pharmaceutical Committee know about the visit: lpc@communitypharmacyss.co.uk
    • Tell Vote Pharmacy campaign organisers how you got on and send everyone your photos! info@psnc.org.uk and votepharmacy@npa.co.uk
  • Ask candidates to sign up to this simple pledge: I pledge to back local pharmacies and to show their support on social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) using the hashtag #VotePharmacy.
  • Promote and talk about community pharmacy on social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) using the hashtag #VotePharmacy throughout the election campaign.
